Established in 2001, Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School stands as a beacon of innovation. It’s a joint venture between the prestigious Tsinghua University and the Shenzhen Municipal Government. Tsinghua SIGS wasn’t always its name. Until March 2019, it was known as the Graduate School at Shenzhen (GSST). The renaming marked a significant expansion, incorporating the Tsinghua-Berkeley Shenzhen Institute (TBSI). This fusion created a truly international, borderless, and entrepreneurial academic environment. Located in Shenzhen’s University Town, Tsinghua SIGS is surrounded by other prominent institutions like Peking University Shenzhen Graduate School and Harbin Institute of Technology Shenzhen. The campus is constantly evolving. It’s set to occupy over 50 hectares after the ongoing expansions are complete. Tsinghua SIGS offers a diverse range of master’s and doctoral programs. These programs cover seven key interdisciplinary areas. These areas include Energy & Materials, Data Science & Information Technology, Biopharmaceutical and Health Engineering, Marine Engineering & Technology, Future Human Habitats, Environment & Ecology, and Innovation Management. The school boasts an impressive portfolio of 25 master’s and 17 doctoral programs. International collaboration is a core value at Tsinghua SIGS. The school has partnerships with institutions like UC Berkeley, RWTH Aachen University, Kyoto University, and many others. These collaborations facilitate interdisciplinary research, academic exchange, and joint degree programs. Tsinghua SIGS is also home to cutting-edge research centers. The Shenzhen Geim Graphene Research Center, opened in 2017, focuses on two-dimensional materials and graphene research. It’s led by Professor Andre Geim, a Nobel laureate in Physics. Another notable facility is the RISC-V International Open Source Laboratory (RIOS Lab). Unveiled in 2019, RIOS Lab is spearheaded by Turing Award winner Dr. David Patterson. It delves into the world of RISC-V hardware and software technology. Tsinghua Shenzhen International Graduate School continues to push the boundaries of knowledge and innovation. It plays a crucial role in shaping the future of technology and research in Shenzhen and beyond.
