Picture this serene hillside haven. This is Tsing Shan Monastery. Nestled in the foothills of Castle Peak near Tuen Mun its history whispers through centuries. Legend paints a vibrant picture. During the Northern and Southern Dynasties an Indian Buddhist monk arrived. He traveled the world in a wooden cup. He found a secluded cave near a military camp. There were no monks to conduct ceremonies. So he stayed. He lived a life of solitude. This cave became the humble beginning of Tsing Shan Monastery.

The monastery wasn’t always as grand as it is today. Its official entrance is marked by a magnificent mountain gate archway. The inscription “Fragrant Sea and Famous Mountains” adorns it. It’s a testament to the beauty of Castle Peak. Passing through symbolizes entering a tranquil state of mind. This simple yet solemn atmosphere pervades the entire place. Many Buddhist halls stand amidst lush trees. It’s a perfect place for reflection and peace.

The monastery’s history stretches far beyond this captivating legend. Records indicate its earliest mention in the 1464 Dongguan Gazetteer. Further details appear in the 1688 and 1819 Xinan Gazetteers. It’s considered one of the three oldest temples in Hong Kong. Research shows it as the birthplace of Buddhism in Hong Kong.

The story continues. In the fifth century soldiers were stationed in Tuen Mun. Buddhism arrived from Southeast Asia around that time. The monk Master Pei Tu according to legend arrived in his remarkable wooden cup. He lived in the same cave. Later a Buddhist nun enshrined his cave. Devotees continued to worship there. Even Damo Chanshi supposedly visited the cave in the seventh century.

In 1829 the To clan established the Taoist temple Tsing Wan Kwun. A nun inhabited the cave continuing to venerate Master Pei Tu. In 1914 Chan Chun Ting became abbot. He initially planned to expand the Taoist temple. However in 1918 he converted to Buddhism taking the monastic name Master Hin Ki. He shifted focus building Tsing Shan Monastery next to the Taoist temple. Construction lasted from 1918 to 1930. The nunnery was demolished. After Master Hin Ki’s death in 1932 disputes arose over management. The High Court resolved the issue in 1998. Today Tsing Shan Monastery stands as a testament to faith perseverance and history. Enjoy your time in this peaceful haven.
