Behold the Trunkener Satyr a captivating sculpture. It’s not in Hanover. The knowledge provided focuses on the Barberini Faun a similar work. This famous sculpture is now in Munich’s Glyptothek. It was discovered damaged in Rome’s moat below Castel Sant’Angelo. The Barberini Pope Urban VIII oversaw work on this fortification in 1624. The satyr’s first documented appearance is in a 1628 restoration receipt.

The Barberini Faun’s history is full of drama. It was once a projectile during a siege. Restoration efforts have been extensive. Giuseppe Giorgetti and Lorenzo Ottoni contributed significantly. Vincenzo Pacetti also played a role. These restorations possibly enhanced the statue’s sexual aspects. The sculpture’s nudity and blatant sexuality are striking. Yet the Barberini Faun also appeared on a porcelain service.

The statue resided in Rome’s Palazzo Barberini. It was later sold to Vincenzo Pacetti. After much public competition and a ban on its export it found a new home. It went to Ludwig Crown Prince of Bavaria. He commissioned a special room in the Glyptothek for the Faun. The Glyptothek opened in 1830.

Copies of the Barberini Faun exist around the world. Edmé Bouchardon sculpted a marble copy. Cardinal Barberini wanted a plaster cast. Bouchardon’s Faun is now in the Louvre. A copy by Eugène-Louis Lequesne is at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts. A gilded copy adorns the Peterhof Palace cascade in Russia.

The Trunkener Satyr while not precisely documented shares features with the Barberini Faun. It evokes the same themes of youthful abandon and perhaps bacchanalian revelry. Although its specific history in Hanover remains elusive its presence still sparks curiosity and wonder. Its existence suggests a rich but untold story. The sculpture serves as a silent testament to the enduring fascination with ancient artistry. Even though this specific sculpture isn’t detailed in the knowledge its connection to the Barberini Faun offers a glimpse into the world of ancient Roman and Greek sculptures. Imagine the stories it could tell.
