Did you notice the elegant Y-shape of Trump Plaza Apartments? It stands tall on East 61st Street, a striking presence amidst the Upper East Side’s bustling landscape. Trump Plaza isn’t just another high-rise. It has a story to tell, a story of ambition, controversy, and luxury. Trump Plaza Apartments opened its doors in 1984. Donald Trump envisioned a building that would capture the same marketing magic as his nearby Trump Tower. He named it Trump Plaza, aiming to create a prestigious address. The construction, however, was not without its shadows. It began in 1982, costing a hefty $125 million, significantly more than the initial $50 million estimate. Tragically, a construction worker lost his life during the project, falling 33 stories. The building’s design, by Philip Birnbaum, is a departure from his usual minimalist style. Architectural critic Paul Goldberger described it as “the finest building in Caracas,” noting its distinct Latin American flair. This unique aesthetic set Trump Plaza apart from the typical Third Avenue high-rise. Trump, known for his sometimes exaggerated claims, even added a few imaginary floors to Trump Plaza, publicly stating it had 39 stories when it actually has 36. The Y-shape of Trump Plaza became so iconic that Trump even sued another architect for designing a similar building nearby, claiming design infringement. Trump Plaza Apartments houses 154 units. It has been a home to notable figures like former Kentucky governor John Y. Brown Jr. and his wife Phyllis George, as well as Dick Clark and Martina Navratilova. Even after its completion, Trump retained ownership of several units, along with retail space and the parking garage. The retail spaces have housed a variety of businesses over the years. These include an Italian restaurant owned by film producer Dino De Laurentiis, a Select Comfort furniture store, and even an American Apparel outlet. This blend of residential and commercial spaces creates a dynamic environment. Trump Plaza Apartments stands as a testament to a bygone era of opulence and ambition. It reminds us that even amidst luxury, there are stories of struggle and loss. Its unique architecture continues to grace the Upper East Side skyline, a landmark with a story etched in stone, glass, and metal.
