Founded in 1993 the Trumbullplex Anarchist Collective in Detroit’s Woodbridge neighborhood is more than just a building. It’s a vibrant testament to community and radical ideals. Economic and social relationships are based on mutual aid and the absence of hierarchy. In essence it’s a cooperative living space. Residents share responsibilities. Decisions are made by consensus. The Trumbullplex isn’t just a home. It functions as an art gallery a theater a meeting space. It even provides temporary housing for traveling activists. The art space itself operates solely on donations. Members contribute equally to property maintenance. Dedicated committees handle fundraising outreach and finances. The Trumbullplex isn’t isolated. It actively supports a nearby school for teenage mothers. It also helps cycling nonprofits and urban agriculture organizations in Detroit. This collective truly embodies the spirit of mutual aid. In 2002 Detroit’s Metro Times even named the Trumbullplex the Best Place to Hang Out With Anarchists. The Trumbullplex’s impact extends beyond its walls. It fosters a unique community. The collective acquired adjacent lots for $10000. These lots now serve as community green space. They are used for potlucks herb walks and arts-based events. In 2018 the Trumbullplex celebrated its 25th anniversary with a two-day party. This marked a quarter-century of radical community building and revolutionary change.
