“A mini Alberobello in Palermo?” you might ask. Yes, right here in Punta Barcarello near Sferracavallo, we find the Trulli di Barcarello. These miniature trulli offer a surprising taste of Puglia in Sicily. They stand not far from the Capo Gallo nature reserve.
These aren’t ancient structures. The Trulli di Barcarello are a relatively recent addition to the landscape. They create an open-air museum with a unique charm.
The “Trulli of Sicily” are smaller than their Puglian cousins. They stand only about 130 centimeters tall. These little stone buildings mimic the style of Alberobello’s famous trulli. You’ll also spot a small Egyptian sphinx. A fishing boat has been repurposed as a flower bed. There is even a miniature amphitheater here.
Local stories give the Trulli di Barcarello an air of mystery. Some say a pirate named Barbarossa hid treasure in one of them. Legend claims a spirit guards this hidden loot appearing only at night. Others believe fairies built the trulli drawn by the area’s beauty. Still others whisper of a witch who once lived here.
But the real story is less fantastical. The area’s transformation began in the 1800s. Sicily was under Bourbon rule at the time. The nearby small church plays a key role. What looks like a church was actually a guard post of a fort built in 1802. It was part of Palermo’s coastal defenses. The “Fortino” protected the royal family who had arrived from Naples.
Later, locals repurposed the fort as a place of worship. It became a memorial for those lost at sea. Around it a unique sight emerged a mini-village of trulli with a sea view. It is believed that emigrants from Puglia constructed them.
An artist named Franco Pisano also left his mark here. A stone inscription commemorates his work. It describes his God-given talent as an artist, poet and religious man.
Today, the Trulli di Barcarello offer a delightful scene. Adults and children alike enjoy spending afternoons here. It is also a popular spot for taking photos. While this unique site may be overlooked it adds to Palermo’s charm.
