Picture this a tranquil oasis in the heart of Hanoi. This is Truc Bach Lake. Its serene waters reflect the willow trees and the bustling city beyond. Truc Bach Lake isn’t just a pretty face. It holds centuries of history. Originally part of the larger West Lake it was separated in the 17th century. Locals built a dike to create a space for fish farming. This clever move transformed the landscape. The villagers of Truc Yen on the south shore were known for their bamboo blinds. They cultivated a special type of bamboo thriving in the newly formed lake.

Imagine the Trinh Lord Trinh Giang in the 1730s. He built Truc Lam Palace on the lake’s edge. This palace was initially a pleasure palace. It later became a prison for royal concubines. These women were skilled in silk production. Their creations known as Bamboo Village Silk became renowned for their beauty. The silk’s fame spread far beyond Hanoi. The lake itself remained central to the lives of the people.

In 1957 and 1958 Thanh Nien Road was constructed between the lakes. It opened the lake front but also changed the area forever. Today only the section along Thanh Nien Road is open to the public. The other sides are lined with houses. Sad to say the lake is now one of the most polluted in Hanoi. Pollution sadly mars the beauty. It doesn’t fully erase its rich history. The lake remains a pivotal location in Hanoi’s story.

Remember October 26 1967. US Navy aviator John McCain was shot down over Hanoi. He landed wounded in Truc Bach Lake. This event is significant in the history of the lake and the war. Angry North Vietnamese citizens dragged him from the water. He was captured and became a prisoner of war. In 1985 a monument was built to commemorate his capture not his imprisonment. The monument was later cleaned and the inscription updated at McCain’s request. This small monument is a reminder of a turbulent past. Truc Bach Lake continues to witness the passage of time. It stands as a testament to the resilience of Hanoi. It is a place where history and nature intertwine. So take a moment breathe deeply. Enjoy the beauty of Truc Bach Lake.
