Over 14,000 animals call the Tropenaquarium Hagenbeck in Hamburg home. Isn’t that amazing? The Tropenaquarium opened in 2007, adding a tropical and aquarium world to the already established Hagenbeck Zoo. The Tropenaquarium Hagenbeck covers 8,000 square meters. A translucent roof allows natural light to filter through, maintaining the warm temperatures and humidity required by the exotic inhabitants. More than 300 species thrive within the Tropenaquarium Hagenbeck. The animals aren’t confined to traditional cages. They inhabit specially designed environments that mimic their natural habitats. You might find a snake coiled among tires or lizards hiding in the dense foliage along the walls. The main area features water features, natural scenery, and a tropical atmosphere. Aquariums and a cave system are located on the lower level. A circular path connects these areas with resting and refreshment spots along the way. Upon entering the Tropenaquarium Hagenbeck, you’ll be greeted by free-roaming ring-tailed lemurs. These usually shy creatures live in a group and might approach curious visitors. Free-flying birds also share this space. Continuing through the Tropenaquarium Hagenbeck, you’ll encounter a variety of animals up close. Walkways and bridges cross directly over enclosures housing turtles, fish, and crocodiles. In the cave area, a glass pane separates you from venomous snakes, insects, and spiders. The bat cave offers an authentic sensory experience, even down to the smell. A significant portion of the aquarium is located beneath the large tropical house. The above-ground tour also passes several tanks and water features, hinting at the larger underwater world below. Downstairs, numerous separate tanks house rays, jellyfish, and more. A large ocean tank contains a vibrant coral reef teeming with clownfish, sharks, and other marine life.
