Triumphant Life Ministries. A beacon of faith and resilience. This church’s story begins, not here, but in the basement of Mt. Sinai Tabernacle Church in November 1969. Pastor Hall and 63 devoted individuals gathered, united by a shared vision. They sought to establish a new church, a place where faith and community could flourish. Three names were considered: Beacon, Triune, and Triumph. Triumph resonated deeply, symbolizing hope amidst the struggles of the time. “Victory” became their greeting, “Victory in Jesus” their anthem.

Triumph Baptist Church, as it was then known, was born. Pastor Hall, elected for life, envisioned a ministry focused on evangelism and discipleship. He emphasized a commitment to biblical teachings, steering away from traditional church practices. From the outset, ministries like the Daycare Center and the Triumph Baptist Federal Credit Union were established, demonstrating a focus on community service alongside spiritual growth. That very first night, pledges totaling over $5,000 were made, with an offering of $1,100 collected—a testament to their dedication.

For four Sundays, they shared space with Mt. Sinai Tabernacle. Then, in December 1969, they found a new home. The former Mt. Herman Church of God building on 16th & Wingohocking Street became their sanctuary. Guided by Rev. Joseph Gilmore, they occupied this vacated building and began their work in earnest. Triumph Baptist Church thrived in this space, ministering, witnessing, growing, and experiencing the power of God. Their outreach programs touched the lives of many within the surrounding community, bringing countless souls to Christ.

Tragedy struck in February 1978. A devastating fire ravaged their beloved church. For three long years, they were displaced, worshipping at the Boys and Girls Club on Wayne Avenue. Their church school found refuge in the homes of 15 dedicated members. The spirit of Triumph Baptist Church remained unbroken. Finally, in March 1981, their rebuilt church welcomed them back. They returned to their spiritual home, stronger and more determined than ever. Since then, they have witnessed the power and presence of God in profound ways.

Triumph Baptist Church’s story is one of expansion and community impact. They purchased and demolished two houses on 16th Street to create an educational wing. This wing became home to their Daycare, Christian School, Senior Citizen ministry, a food distribution ministry, and a chapel for intimate gatherings. Their reach extended further with the acquisition of property at Broad and Wingohocking Streets, which became the Shop and Bag Supermarket. They purchased a building at 18th & Courtland, initially intended as the site of a new church. However, divine guidance led them to their current location at Germantown and Hunting Park, a magnificent edifice they’ve occupied since 2007.

Triumph Baptist Church’s journey is marked by partnership, growth, and unwavering faith. A partnership with St. Paul’s Baptist Church of Brooklyn led to the purchase and eventual sale of a hotel site in Mannheim, PA. The proceeds paved the way for their Germantown and Hunting Park location. The School District of Philadelphia even deeded adjacent property to the church, destined to become the future Family Life Center.

Triumph Baptist Church’s influence extends beyond its immediate community. They support missionary work through the Progressive Baptist Convention and the National Baptist Convention. They contribute to the Pennsylvania Baptist State Convention and provide aid to those in need in Haiti. They support ministries and churches led by “sons of the Church” and contribute to several Black colleges. Their commitment to social justice is evident in their life membership in the NAACP and their unwavering support for causes that benefit humanity, especially those that uplift children. From 63 members to over 5,400, Triumph Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith, resilience, and the power of community. Their story is a true victory through Christ.
