A symphony of splashing water greets us here at the Triton-Brunnen. It is a majestic landmark on Dusseldorf’s prestigious Königsallee. The Triton-Brunnen, inaugurated in 1898, reflects a time of great growth and prosperity for Dusseldorf. This masterpiece, designed by the sculptor Friedrich Coubillier, was commissioned by the then mayor Heinrich Lueg. Look closely at the fountain’s centerpiece. You’ll see three bronze tritons, mythical sea creatures, locked in a battle with a giant fish. Each triton holds a shell, from which water gracefully cascades into the basin below. Look above the tritons. There you can spot two sea nymphs resting on rocks. These figures symbolize navigation and trade, reflecting Dusseldorf’s historical economic pillars. At the very top of the Triton-Brunnen stands Fortuna, the Roman goddess of fortune. She holds a ship’s rudder and a cornucopia, symbolizing the wealth and prosperity that Dusseldorf has long enjoyed. The Triton-Brunnen stands as a symbol of Dusseldorf’s rich artistic and cultural heritage. It embodies the city’s ambition and its transformation into a major cultural hub.
