Constructed entirely of granite without a single piece of iron or wood the Triplicane Big Wallajah Mosque stands as a testament to architectural ingenuity. This magnificent mosque also known as the Wallajah Mosque in Chennai was built in 1795. It is one of the largest and oldest mosques in the city. The Nawab of Arcot’s family commissioned its construction.

Notice the unique blend of Mughal architectural style. The two tall minarets are a striking feature. The mosque’s grandeur is further enhanced by its two gold-plated domes. These domes and minarets reach 131 feet into the sky. The mosque’s construction is truly remarkable. It showcases the skill of artisans of the time.

A fascinating detail is the chronogram. This is inscribed in Persian on the prayer hall’s entrance. It was written by Raja Makhhan Lal Bahadur Khirat. He was the Hindu Munshi or personal secretary to the Nawab. This inscription alone speaks volumes about the peaceful coexistence between Hindus and Muslims. It reflects the religious harmony of the time.

The mosque’s vast prayer hall is capable of accommodating thousands of worshippers. There’s also a well-maintained tank and a huge ground in front of the complex. West of the sanctum lie mausoleums. These are the resting places for important members of the royal family. The Prince of Arcot Endowments Trust meticulously maintains the mosque. Interestingly many of the mosque’s administrative staff are Hindus. This unique situation highlights the peaceful religious coexistence in the area.

The Triplicane Big Wallajah Mosque is more than just a place of worship. It is a living monument to history. It stands as a symbol of religious harmony. It is a reminder of the rich cultural heritage of Chennai. The mosque invites us to reflect on the past. It also inspires us to strive for peace and understanding in our world today.
