A melody, faint yet familiar, seemed to drift from the weathered stones of Trinity United Methodist Church. It whispered of hymns sung and prayers offered, echoing through the decades. Trinity United Methodist Church arose from a merger in 1984. It combined Second United Methodist Church and Elysian Fields United Methodist Church. This union brought together two congregations under one roof, the 1957 Elysian Fields edifice. A tangible piece of the Second United Methodist Church’s history, its pipe organ, found a new home here. It replaced the aging electronic organ at Elysian Fields. The Hinners Organ Company, Opus 775 from 1907, originally built this grand instrument. Later, the Redman Organ Company renovated and enhanced it. The organ’s voice filled Trinity United Methodist Church with rich, resonant tones, enhancing the spiritual atmosphere. Sadly, disaster struck in 2005. Hurricane Katrina flooded the church, leaving devastation in its wake. The magnificent organ, a symbol of the church’s united history, was silenced. The building itself suffered severe damage. The fate of the congregation after this tragedy remains uncertain. This church stands as a poignant reminder of the power of nature and the resilience of faith.
