The United Church was founded in 1925. It was a merger of four Protestant denominations. These were the Methodist Church Canada. Also, the Congregational Union of Ontario and Quebec. As well as two-thirds of the Presbyterian Church in Canada. And the Association of Local Union Churches. The Canadian Conference of the Evangelical United Brethren Church joined in 1968.

The United Church of Canada has a council-based structure. Each council has specific responsibilities. The policies of the church are inclusive and liberal. There are no restrictions based on gender. Nor on sexual orientation or marital status. Interfaith marriages are recognized. Communion is offered to all Christians. This includes adults and children. It is irrespective of denomination or age.
