In 1890, a group of German immigrants, seeking a spiritual anchor in their new home, established Trinity Lutheran Church. These families, originally from Lower Manhattan, found solace and community amidst the burgeoning neighborhoods of Astoria and Long Island City. Trinity Lutheran Church became a testament to their resilience and faith. Initially, the services resonated with the familiar sounds of German. But as time marched on and the congregation became more diverse, English became the primary language in the 1920s. The present church building, a magnificent example of Collegiate Gothic style, stands as a proud symbol of the church’s growth. Designed by John William Cresswell Corbusier and overseen by George W. Conable, the 1926 structure is a feast for the eyes. Its brick facade, adorned with coursed rubble aplite and cast stone trim, exudes an aura of timeless elegance. The recessed entry, crowned by a large window and flanked by two ornate spires, beckons visitors to step inside and experience the serenity within. Inside Trinity Lutheran Church, the Gothic plan of nave and transepts creates a sense of awe and reverence. The soft glow of light filtering through stained-glass windows illuminates the rich wooden pews. And the majestic 1927 Skinner pipe organ, still operational today, fills the sanctuary with soul-stirring melodies during Sunday services. Trinity Lutheran Church has always been a welcoming haven for immigrants from all corners of the globe. Today, its diverse family includes people from Tanzania, Poland, Sierra Leone, Spain, Peru, Germany, Hungary, China, Israel, India, Egypt, Panama, Guyana, Colombia, and various parts of the United States. It also embraces those born and raised in Astoria and Long Island City, creating a true tapestry of cultures and backgrounds. Even the church garden reflects this vibrant spirit. Lovingly maintained by John Simmons and a team of dedicated volunteers, the garden is a small paradise. Bursting with colorful flowers, trees, and even edible delights like strawberries, raspberries, corn, and pumpkins, it symbolizes the growth and abundance that Trinity Lutheran Church represents.
