It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of the Korean people. Trinity Korean Methodist Church was founded in 1921. Its birth was intertwined with the flames of the Korean independence movement. Imagine Korean immigrants in New York City, yearning for freedom from Japanese rule. They found solace and strength in their shared faith. On April 18, 1921, these patriots gathered at Madison Avenue Methodist Church for their first service. This marked the beginning of Trinity Korean Methodist Church. The church’s early days were marked by activism. It served as a hub for Korean intellectuals, students, and independence workers. Their desire for a free Korea fueled their gatherings. The church’s location in Morningside Heights, near Columbia University, solidified its intellectual character. Trinity Korean Methodist Church moved to its current location on West 115th Street in 1927. This four-story building, much like its predecessor on West 21st Street, became a symbol of hope. The church faced challenges over the years. Membership fluctuated. Congregants sought larger spaces for worship, even holding services at St. Hilda’s & St. Hugh’s School, Broadway Temple, and Union Theological Seminary. Yet, Trinity Korean Methodist Church persevered, earning its nickname as the “mother church” for other Korean congregations in the city. The church’s story continued with the establishment of the English Speaking Congregation in 1985, later evolving into Morningside Ministry. This marked a new chapter in Trinity Korean Methodist Church’s history. It reflected the evolving needs of the Korean American community. The church’s legacy extends beyond its walls. It stands as a symbol of resilience, faith, and the pursuit of freedom. The Trinity Korean Methodist Church embarked on a new chapter in its history. Construction of a new building began in July 2015. The congregation celebrated its centennial in 2021 with the dedication of this new space. Trinity Korean Methodist Church continues to serve as a spiritual and cultural anchor for the Korean American community.
