The stained-glass windows of Trinity Church of Livonia shimmered. Sunlight poured through them painting vibrant hues across the sanctuary floor.
Trinity Church of Livonia wasn’t always here. Its story begins not in this beautiful building but in a small mission hall on Oakland Avenue in 1924. Fifteen people gathered with a dream. They wanted to spread the Lord’s word in the Fenkell-Livernois district. This small group became the foundation of what we see today.
Their first worship space was a humble store room. Can you imagine? A simple store room on Fenkell and Parkside. They then moved above the Fenkell Theatre. It must have been an interesting transition. Finally on December 11 1927 they moved into their current location. This wasn’t the end of their journey though. An addition to the auditorium was built in 1935. The church grew and adapted. Its members reflected the changing face of Detroit.
The church’s name itself has an interesting history. Initially called Olivet Baptist Church they soon discovered another Baptist Church used the same name. To avoid confusion they adopted the name Trinity. A name that truly reflects the three-fold nature of God. A name that reflects the three aspects of God that they sought to embody.
In 1964 Trinity Baptist Church embarked on an interracial ministry. This was a bold move. It required courage and vision. Leaders like Frank Camper Norm Mathais and Ken Hampton guided the church through this new chapter. They fostered incredible spiritual development among the youth. Their legacy continues to shape the church’s identity.
For twenty-six years the congregation benefited from the guidance of Pastor Rev Dr Lyle M Adams. His strong faith and love for the community inspired countless individuals. In fact the former Trinity Baptist Church Indiana location is now known as The Dr Lyle M Adams Activity Building. It’s a fitting tribute to his enduring contribution.
Pastor Hollis M Evans served as Senior Pastor for an impressive 36 years. He then transitioned to Pastor Emeritus in 2018. His long tenure is a testament to his dedication and the church’s stability under his leadership. Pastor Maurice A Flaniken followed serving as Interim Pastor before being elected as the current Pastor in January 2018.
Trinity Church of Livonia is more than just a building. It’s a testament to faith perseverance and community. It’s a living legacy built on the dreams of fifteen individuals in a small mission hall. It’s a story of growth adaptation and unwavering devotion to God. A story written in stained glass song and unwavering faith. A story still being written.
