Why is Trinity Church of God nicknamed the “Bishops’ Church”? We’re standing in front of Trinity Church of God, a place deeply woven into the fabric of New Orleans. Founded in 1847, Trinity Church of God quickly established itself as a pillar of the Episcopal community. What makes it truly special is its remarkable connection to leadership within the Church. Over the years, an impressive six rectors from Trinity Church of God have gone on to become bishops. This legacy has earned the church its affectionate nickname, the “Bishops’ Church,” a testament to its role in shaping religious leadership. One of its most noteworthy figures is Bishop Leonidas Polk, a prominent figure in the mid-1800s. He served as rector of Trinity Church of God from 1855 to 1860 before becoming a bishop and, sadly, a general in the Confederate Army during the Civil War. The church’s impact extends beyond producing bishops. The Rev. John Stone Jenkins, rector from 1971 to 1984, developed the “Disciples of Christ” program here. This program, now known as “Disciples of Christ in Community,” focuses on lay theological education and is used in Episcopal parishes across the country. Trinity Church of God stands as a testament to enduring faith, leadership, and community impact in the heart of New Orleans.
