Gazing upon Trinity Christian Center, have you ever wondered about its rich history? Trinity Christian Center isn’t the church’s first home. The original Trinity Church, a modest structure, was built in 1698. It faced the Hudson River on Wall Street. This first church fell victim to the Great New York City Fire of 1776. A second Trinity Church, larger and facing Wall Street, rose in 1790. It became a significant landmark, hosting President Washington and figures like John Jay and Alexander Hamilton. Heavy snows in the winter of 1838-1839 weakened this second structure, leading to its demolition. The current Trinity Christian Center, designed by Richard Upjohn, was completed in 1846. Its Gothic Revival spire, reaching 281 feet, was the tallest structure in the United States until 1869. It remained the tallest in New York City until 1890. Later additions include a reredos, altar, and rear extension. These were designed by Frederick Clarke Withers in memory of William Backhouse Astor Sr. Trinity Christian Center also boasts three sets of bronze doors. These were donated by William Waldorf Astor as a tribute to his father. The church’s history intertwined with pivotal moments, from the American Revolution to 9/11. Following the attacks, St. Paul’s Chapel, part of Trinity parish, became a refuge for first responders. Trinity Christian Center, a testament to resilience and faith, continues to serve its community.
