Discover the legacy of Trinity Baptist Church. This magnificent building stands proudly on East 61st Street. It’s more than just a church. It’s a testament to faith resilience and the immigrant experience.

Trinity Baptist Church’s story began in 1867. Fifteen men and nineteen women gathered. They were led by Captain R E Jeanson. They formed the First Swedish Baptist Church of New York. These pioneering Swedes sought a spiritual home in a new land. They initially worshipped near the docks of lower Manhattan. Later they moved to the Colgate Chapel on 20th Street. Finally they bought a building on East 27th Street in 1893. Their growing congregation needed more space. They purchased a larger building. This was the former Trinity Baptist Church on East 55th Street in 1899. From this location they served the growing number of Swedish immigrants. Missionaries were sent to the docks. Their mission was to welcome newcomers and offer spiritual support.

The church thrived. A building boom in the 1920s led to a decision. The congregation sold their aging building. The proceeds financed a new structure. This impressive building opened in 1931. Martin Gravely Hedmark designed it. His creation is a remarkable blend of Art Deco style and Baltic Gothic influences. Black granite cornerstones and Nordic bell towers reflect the church’s Swedish heritage. Inside the sanctuary is lavishly decorated. Frescoed walls stained glass intricate woodwork and Orrefors crystal create a stunning environment. The acoustics are exceptional making singing a joyful experience.

Initially services were held in Swedish. However as time passed things changed. Swedish immigration slowed. Many Swedes moved westward. Descendants of the original settlers became English speakers. In 1942 the church’s name was officially changed to Trinity Baptist Church. The language of worship also changed to English.
