Hidden in plain sight, the Trinitatiskirche stands as a testament to resilience. This church has witnessed a dramatic transformation. It’s a story of destruction and rebirth, deeply intertwined with the history of Altona. Trinitatiskirche was first mentioned in 1743 as a Danish church. Altona was under Danish rule, separated from Hamburg by a border. Imagine the vibrant life that once surrounded this church, now standing almost isolated. This isolation offers an unobstructed view of its beautiful architecture.

The Trinitatiskirche was once part of Altona’s old town. Nearby lies the Jewish cemetery of Altona. The Reeperbahn, Park Fiction, and the harbor with the Fischmarkt are within walking distance. The church’s interior was once a Baroque masterpiece. Sadly, the bombing raids of July 1943 left almost nothing of this splendor. Only the outer walls, empty window sockets, and the scorched tower base remained. Demolition seemed inevitable.

However, between 1958 and 1969, preservationists ensured the church’s original exterior was restored. Enter through the main portal, beneath the tower with its six bells, and step into a modern marvel. The interior’s reconstruction embraced a modern design by sculptor Peter Dreher. The original main cornice and cross-barrel vault were retained. Beneath their intersection lies the new altar, a focal point of the space.

The Trinitatiskirche holds a unique treasure. A 13th-century oak crucifix, depicting a smiling Christ. This smiling Christ is a rarity in European art. Another remarkable piece is the life-sized painting of St. Ansgar, created in 1823. St. Ansgar, the “Apostle of the North,” was the 9th-century Archbishop of Hamburg, missionary, and cathedral founder. The painting, by Siegfried Bendixen, reflects the spirit of the Reformation.

This painting has its own story of return. It hung in the Trinitatiskirche until 1940 when it was taken for restoration. During the church’s destruction, it remained safe in the Altona Museum depot. Forgotten after the war, it was rediscovered and meticulously restored. Finally, in 2006, it returned to its home in the Trinitatiskirche. The Trinitatiskirche’s story is a powerful reminder of perseverance and the enduring spirit of Altona.
