A shimmering kaleidoscope of light. That’s the first impression of the Triforium. This isn’t just any sculpture. The Triforium in Los Angeles is a 60-foot-tall testament to art and technology. Imagine a concrete tower adorned with 1494 Venetian glass prisms. Each prism catches the light transforming the Triforium into a constantly shifting spectacle.

Originally conceived in 1971 the Triforium was meant to be more than just pretty. Artist Joseph Young envisioned a kinetic masterpiece. Motion sensors would translate the movement of people below into patterns of light and sound. He even dreamed of laser beams shooting into the sky a truly astronomical beacon. Budget cuts sadly limited his vision. The carillon a 79-bell marvel remained. Its music was meant to range from Beethoven to the Bee Gees a truly eclectic mix.

The Triforium’s story isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. It had a rocky start. Its computer system malfunctioned. Critics panned it. Nicknames like “Trifoolery” and “Psychedelic Nickelodeon” emerged. A judge even complained the sound interfered with his trials. Years of disrepair followed. Leaks plagued its base. Pigeons took up residence. It became too expensive to fix yet too expensive to tear down. A perfect example of a public art project’s struggles.

But the Triforium’s story isn’t over. In 2006 lights were restored. A 2016 upgrade thanks to a $100000 grant brought further improvements. The Triforium Project a collaboration of artists and engineers is pushing for a complete revival. They aim to replace incandescent bulbs with LEDs. A new networked computer will allow passersby to interact via a mobile app. The Triforium’s future. It’s bright. It’s dynamic. It’s ready for a new generation to experience its unique magic. The Triforium a symbol of Los Angeles’s ever-evolving spirit and its commitment to bold artistic expression. A true Los Angeles landmark.
