Did the ancient forest whisper secrets of iron? We stand before the Trichtergruben im Rauhen Forst. These funnel-shaped depressions hold a tale from a time long past. The Trichtergruben im Rauhen Forst are not natural formations. They are remnants of early medieval mining activity. Imagine the Rauhen Forst around 750 to 1000 AD. Miners sought a precious commodity: iron ore. Iron was essential, especially for crafting weapons. In this era of wooden tools, iron held immense value. The miners dug shafts into the weathered gravel. These shafts, 5 to 10 meters deep, yielded iron ore nodules called geodes. The Trichtergruben im Rauhen Forst are the visible scars of these ancient mining efforts. Each pit yielded approximately 5 kilograms of these precious geodes. The type of gravel found here is called “obere Süsswassermolasse”. The demand for iron also meant vast deforestation. Wood was needed to create charcoal for smelting. The iron deposits in the Rauhen Forst were not abundant. By 1200 AD, mining here ceased. Around 7,500 Trichtergruben remain, silent witnesses to this chapter of history. The forest has reclaimed the land. The Trichtergruben im Rauhen Forst whisper a tale of industry and resourcefulness in the heart of the Rauhen Forst.
