A bronze hero on a rearing steed. That’s the Tres de Abril Marker Statue. It stands before us a silent testament to courage. To a battle fought on Palm Sunday not Good Friday as originally planned.
The Tres de Abril Marker Statue commemorates the Battle of Tres de Abril. This pivotal event in Cebu’s history occurred on April 3 1898. It was a clash between Cebuano Katipuneros and Spanish conquistadors. The battle’s namesake is a street in Cebu City.
Leon Kilat a revolutionary leader not from Cebu but Bacong Negros Oriental spearheaded the uprising. He earned his moniker Leon Kilat meaning “Lightning Leon” for his bravery and speed in battle. His real name was Pantaleon Villegas. Interestingly he worked in a German pharmacy and even a Manila circus before joining the Katipunan.
The Katipuneros planned to attack on Good Friday. A confession however revealed their plans. Forced to act early they attacked on Palm Sunday. The battle unfolded at the intersection of V Rama Avenue and Tres de Abril Street. A fierce but brief skirmish ensued. The Katipuneros armed with bolos surprised the Spanish soldiers. They exploited the rifles’ limited five-shot capacity. While the Spaniards reloaded the Katipuneros attacked overwhelming them.
The Katipuneros briefly controlled Fort San Pedro. Their victory was short-lived. Spanish reinforcements arrived on April 7. The Katipuneros retreated. Despite their loss the Battle of Tres de Abril ignited the revolutionary spirit in Cebu. It proved a crucial step towards Philippine independence.
Leon Kilat’s story however ends tragically. He was murdered in his sleep in Carcar by his own military assistant Apolinario Alcuitas. The residents of Carcar unbeknownst to him were loyal to the Spaniards. His death did not end the revolution. General Arcadio Maxilom continued the fight.
The Tres de Abril Marker Statue stands as a powerful reminder. It honors the bravery of the Cebuano revolutionaries. It symbolizes their fight for freedom. It’s more than just a statue.
