Hamburg suffered greatly during World War II. The Allied bombing raids of 1943, codenamed Operation Gomorrah, devastated the city. The British Royal Air Force relentlessly bombed Hamburg’s densely populated inner-city districts. Their aim was to break the morale of the German population. The US Air Force targeted submarine yards and armaments factories during the day.
The firestorm reduced much of Hamburg to rubble and ash. Over 35,000 people perished in the inferno. Among them were thousands of foreign forced laborers and over 5,000 children. One million people fled the city. More than 120,000 suffered wounds, many severely. The eastern part of Hamburg endured the worst of the destruction. Neighborhoods like Hammerbrook, Rothenburgsort, Horn, and Hamm were utterly destroyed. These areas became restricted zones.
Neuengamme concentration camp prisoners were forced to recover bodies. They cleared rubble and defused unexploded bombs. From August 1943, these prisoners were housed in terrible conditions. They stayed first on Brackdamm and later in satellite camps. These camps included Spaldingstrasse and Bullenhuser Damm.
Amidst this devastation, resistance flickered. Groups like the Sozialistische Aktion, published by exiled SPD members, spread hope. Their slogan, “Die Freiheit lebt!,” meaning “Freedom lives!,” echoed through Hamburg’s underground. They stood in stark contrast to the destruction wrought by the Nazis.
