Imagine stepping into Travis Park a vibrant green space in the heart of San Antonio. This isn’t just any park. Travis Park is one of the oldest municipal parks in the United States. It boasts a rich history dating back to 1870.

Before it was a park this land had a fascinating past. It was once part of the Alamo Mission’s farmlands. Later Samuel Augustus Maverick a lawyer and signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence owned it. Upon his death in 1870 he gifted the property to the city. The city initially named it Travis Plaza honoring Colonel William Barrett Travis the Alamo’s commander.

The park has witnessed significant changes. In 1876 the city added grass benches and a whitewashed fence. Hackberry trees once graced the park but were removed in 1956. In 1899 a 40-foot granite spire with a Confederate soldier statue was erected. This statue designed by Virginia Montgomery and crafted by Frank Teich was a first of its kind. It was the first monument designed by a woman in the United States. The statue stood for over a century before being removed in 2017.

Today Travis Park is a lively hub. It hosts a variety of events throughout the year. Think free movies food trucks live music fitness classes and even historical tours. The park’s design is thoughtfully planned. Brick and concrete pathways radiate from a central circle. Semi-circular alcoves add an elegant touch. Modern additions like movable seating benches picnic tables and kiosks enhance the visitor experience.
