Didn’t the William A. Wilson Realty Company once say that Travis School was one of the best built in Houston? That was back in 1910. Today, we’re standing in front of Travis Elementary School. It is located in Houston’s Woodland Heights. This school has a rich history. It has evolved over more than a century.

Originally, it was known as Beauchamp Springs School. That was in 1903. Later, the school was renamed after William Barrett Travis. He was a hero of the Texas Revolution. The first building bearing the name Travis Elementary was built in 1908. Construction finished in 1909.

Imagine a three-story building. It featured 12 classrooms. The playground was a gift to the city. It was larger than most schoolyards. A new campus was built in 1926. It included a cafeteria, an auditorium, and 12 classrooms.

Travis Elementary has adapted to changing times. In 1971, desegregation plans were put in place. An addition was built in the 1970s. This brought the school’s area to 69000 square feet.

In 1985, Travis had about 300 students. A teacher named Margaret Blackstone noted significant improvements. These improvements resulted from a magnet program. There was also revitalization of the neighborhoods nearby. Educated professionals moved to the area. By 2006, Travis had about 700 students.

In 2004, the school’s attendance boundary was adjusted. This was due to increased traffic on Studewood Street. The change ensured the safety of students.

Travis Elementary underwent a major renovation. The project cost $14.5 million. During construction, students attended classes in temporary buildings. These buildings were called Camp Travis. The new building was dedicated on October 25, 2006.

Travis Elementary chose to celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2008. This reflected the 1908 establishment year.

The school building now has 32 classrooms. There is also an art room. A cafeteria and a computer lab are available. Students can use a dance room. The library and music room enhance learning. A science lab is also available. There is even an outdoor classroom.

Travis Elementary is more than just a school. It is a hub of learning and community. It has a rich history and a bright future. The school organizes a Spring Auction and Dinner every year. This funds enrichment programs. The Halloween Carnival also serves as a fundraiser.

The school park is a special place. It became a SPARK Park in 1991. A dinosaur sculpture stands proudly. It is called the Travisaurus. Dale Barton created a mural for the park. It shows prehistoric plants and sea creatures.

Travis Elementary continues to evolve. It is committed to providing quality education. It also enriches the lives of its students. The school nurtures the next generation of leaders. Travis Elementary School stands as a testament to the power of education. It is a beacon of hope for the community.
