Picture a steam tram chugging along. This is the story of the Tranvie Milano-Pavia e Pavia-Sant’Angelo Lodigiano. It is a tale of ambition and lost connections.

This story begins in the late 19th century. Italy was young. Railroads were the symbol of progress. Ambitious plans arose to link Pavia and Brescia by rail. The route would pass through Lodi and Crema.

But grand plans often falter. The main railway line took a different path. It went via Cremona. A tramway seemed the best alternative. It would run on existing roads. This later became the SS 235.

On July 30 1884 the Pavia-Sant’Angelo Lodigiano tramway opened. The Societé des Tramways managed it. They also ran the Milano-Pavia line. Soon the Belgian company stepped aside. The Società Anonima Ferrovie del Ticino took over.

The Tranvie Milano-Pavia e Pavia-Sant’Angelo Lodigiano began to decline in 1918. The Sant’Angelo-Lodi section closed. Scarce traffic was to blame. The route from Pavia to Lodi was severed. In 1931 the line to Melegnano also shut down. Only the Pavia line remained. It still reached Sant’Angelo.

The SFT was also downsizing its tram network. Their network spanned Novara and Vercelli. In 1933 they sold the Pavia-Sant’Angelo and Milano-Pavia lines. The buyer was MMC. MMC already ran the Milano-Magenta line. It also had a branch to Castano Primo.

But the MMC’s ownership was brief. Just one year later the company closed the line. The Tranvie Milano-Pavia e Pavia-Sant’Angelo Lodigiano was gone.

The Pavia-Sant’Angelo Lodigiano line started in Piazza Petrarca. This was Pavia’s station. It was shared with the Milan line.

The tramway ran alongside the Naviglio Pavese for a short distance. It then followed the road to Lodi. Finally it arrived in Sant’Angelo Lodigiano. The terminus was far from the Lodi and Melegnano lines. There was no connection between them.

The Tranvie Milano-Pavia e Pavia-Sant’Angelo Lodigiano used steam power. Its track gauge matched others in the region. It measured 1445 mm.

The rise and fall of the Tranvie Milano-Pavia e Pavia-Sant’Angelo Lodigiano shows how transport evolves. Ambitious dreams can be reshaped by economics and progress. The steam tram faded away but its story lives on. It reminds us of a time when local connections mattered most.
