Curious about how the Isle of Man found its voice? That story leads us directly to the Manx Radio Transmitter. This isn’t just any transmitter. It’s the heart of the island’s first legal commercial radio station.

Manx Radio began broadcasting on June 29, 1964. This was almost ten years before commercial radio was legal in the United Kingdom. The Isle of Man had its own government and laws. So, it wasn’t subject to the UK’s broadcasting rules.

The Manx Government still needed permission to broadcast. They applied to the UK’s General Post Office in 1960. They finally got a license in May 1964. The station started with an FM frequency of 89.0 MHz. Its power was only 50 watts. In October 1964, they got another frequency: 1594 kHz AM. This gave them better coverage. Even so, its power was still limited to 50 watts.

Originally, Manx Radio broadcast from a caravan. It sat on a hilltop in Onchan. The station gained its first AM channel in 1964. It was 188 metres. The first commercial was for a jeweller’s shop in Douglas. In 1965, the caravan was left behind. Studios were set up on the Douglas seafront.

In October 1969, Manx Radio moved to its current home. This is Broadcasting House on top of Douglas Head. The building used to be a Royal Navy radar training place. It was built during the Second World War.

Today, Manx Radio broadcasts on several frequencies. You can hear it on 89.0 MHz from Snaefell. That covers the north of the island. It’s on 97.2 MHz FM from Douglas or Carnane for the south. The frequency of 103.7 MHz from Jurby covers the hills. Additional transmitters cover Ramsey and Peel on 89.5 MHz. Manx Radio Gold broadcasts on 1368 AM across the island.

Manx Radio isn’t just a radio station. It’s a public service broadcaster. It is responsible to Tynwald. Its operations are reviewed every year. It provides hourly news bulletins. They also produce shows about news and local politics.

During the Isle of Man TT races, Manx Radio provides coverage. It broadcasts news and results on 1368 kHz. The service is also available on 87.9 FM in Douglas and 100.6 FM in Sulby. The station features music, TT news, TT events, and travel information.

From a humble caravan to a historic building, Manx Radio has evolved. It remains a vital part of the island’s identity. As you stand here, consider the voices that have traveled from this Transmitter. They have shaped the Isle of Man’s story for sixty years.
