Professor Ian Frazer, a name synonymous with the HPV vaccine, walks these halls. Here at the Translational Research Institute, or TRI as it’s known, in Woolloongabba, Brisbane, research isn’t just confined to labs. It leaps from the bench to the bedside. The Translational Research Institute bridges the gap between scientific discovery and real-world medical application. Established in 2013, this eight-story marvel cost a staggering $354 million to build. The Translational Research Institute stands as a testament to collaboration. It represents a partnership between Queensland Health, the Queensland University of Technology, The University of Queensland, and Mater Medical Research. This isn’t just a building; it’s a hive of activity, housing over 800 researchers and clinicians. They tackle some of the biggest health challenges we face, from cancer and diabetes to kidney and liver disease. The Translational Research Institute even salvaged red clay bricks from the former Vision Australia building on this very site. These bricks form the base of the TRI, a nod to the past as it builds towards the future. Inside, four floors of laboratories hum with activity. The Translational Research Institute boasts state-of-the-art core facilities. These include microscopy, proteomics, and even a preclinical imaging facility. This co-location with facilities like Patheon Biologics, Australia’s first major biopharmaceutical manufacturing facility, creates a unique ecosystem of innovation. The Translational Research Institute isn’t just researching; it’s producing. It’s turning discoveries into treatments, right here, under one roof. From preventing disease to improving treatments for chronic illnesses, the Translational Research Institute strives to make a tangible difference in patients’ lives. The next breakthrough in medical science could very well happen within these walls.
