Transition Korea. A name that once echoed in the halls of South Korean politics. It’s a story of rapid change and unexpected turns, much like the nation it briefly represented. Right here, at 17 Gukhoe-daero, Yeongdeungpo, Seoul, stood the headquarters of this intriguing political party. Transition Korea, founded on February 23, 2020, by Cho Jung-hoon and Lee Won-jae, carved a unique path. It positioned itself as pragmatic, neither conservative nor progressive. This stance reflected a desire to transcend the traditional political divides in South Korea, focusing instead on practical solutions. One of its co-founders, Lee Won-jae, even championed a basic income, a concept rarely discussed in mainstream Korean politics. Transition Korea’s story is intertwined with the 2020 election. Initially, there were rumors of an alliance with the Minsaeng Party. However, Transition Korea ultimately joined the Platform Party alliance. Cho Jung-hoon secured a seat in the National Assembly through the alliance’s party list. But the partnership was short-lived. Cho was expelled from the Platform Party just a few months later, returning to lead Transition Korea once more. The party’s lifespan was brief. It merged with the People Power Party in November 2023. This merger signaled the end of Transition Korea’s independent existence. Yet, its story offers a glimpse into the dynamic and ever-shifting landscape of South Korean politics. It reminds us that even short-lived ventures can leave a mark, contributing to the ongoing dialogue about the nation’s future.
