Do you hear the gentle chimes? That’s the Town Clock of Apia, a landmark with a story etched in its face.

The Apia Town Clock stands as a poignant reminder of Samoa’s past. It is more than just a timepiece.

In the 1920s, Ta’isi Olaf Nelson gifted this clock to the Samoan people. This was no ordinary present. It was a memorial to his son. His son tragically died in the 1918 influenza epidemic. The epidemic stole the lives of nearly 9,000 Samoans.

But the Town Clock’s significance stretches further. After World War 1, it became a monument to Samoan soldiers. These brave men fought in WW1.

Every year, on April 25th, ANZAC Day dawns. A solemn parade and vigil take place right here at the Apia Town Clock. People remember the Samoans who joined Australian and New Zealand forces. They also honor those who continue to protect our freedoms.

For years, the Town Clock stood silent. Its bells, once a familiar sound, were still. But in 2010, something special happened. As Samoa prepared for its first daylight saving trial, the Town Clock was refurbished. The 5 Bells now chime. They play a full Westminister quarter chime. The Town Clock became a reliable timepiece again for the centre of Apia.

Standing here, you’re not just seeing a clock. You are seeing a symbol of remembrance. You are seeing resilience. You are seeing a nation’s heart, beating in time.
