“Was that Robocop?” You might have thought so if you were here in 1993. Tower Square, once a symbol of telecommunication, briefly became the ominous headquarters of the evil megacorporation OCP in the sci-fi action film RoboCop 3. The towering presence of this 47-story skyscraper has dominated the Atlanta skyline since 1980. But its story is more than just steel and glass. Before Tower Square graced the city with its sleek design, it was a battleground for history and community. The original plan for its parking deck threatened to demolish the beloved Fox Theatre, a cultural gem of Atlanta. Public outcry, fuelled by passionate pleas and even support from Liberace, ultimately saved the Fox Theatre from demolition. A new plan relocated the parking deck, ensuring both landmarks could coexist. Today, Tower Square stands as a testament to the power of community and a silent guardian of Atlanta’s cultural heritage.
