Deep within Parc Jean-Drapeau, the Tower of Lévis stands as a silent sentinel. It observes the bustling city of Montreal. It has witnessed the ebb and flow of history since 1936. The Tower of Lévis isn’t just a tower. It’s a time capsule. It holds within its stone walls the echoes of Montreal’s past. Originally built to house a water reservoir, the Tower of Lévis has evolved. It transformed from a utilitarian structure to a beloved landmark. It offers breathtaking panoramic views. From its observation deck, reached by 157 indoor steps, you can gaze upon the stunning cityscape. You can also see the shimmering St. Lawrence River and the verdant islands that dot its surface. The tower’s very construction speaks to the ingenuity and resilience of its creators. Built during the 1930s, the Tower of Lévis showcases the distinctive breccia stone. This stone came from a quarry on Saint Helen’s Island. This very island where the tower proudly stands. Unfortunately, the breccia stone, with its unique characteristics, proved less durable than expected. Exposure to the elements, combined with the tower’s location atop a cliff, took its toll. A restoration project was undertaken to preserve this iconic structure. Nearly 90% of the original stones were carefully replaced with a more resilient silica sandstone. This new stone was chosen not only for its durability, but also for its ability to oxidize. Over time, it will beautifully blend with the remaining original stones. This ensures the tower’s historic aesthetic remains intact for generations to come. The Tower of Lévis has borne witness to much. From its vantage point, it silently observed the transformation of Montreal’s skyline. It watched as the city grew and flourished. The tower stands not just as a monument to the past, but as a symbol of the city’s enduring spirit. It is a reminder of the importance of preserving our history while embracing the future.
