Feel the ancient stones beneath your fingertips. This is the Tower of Anthussa-Ymittos. A sentinel on the slopes of Mount Ymittos it stands overlooking the sprawling city of Athens.

The Tower of Anthussa-Ymittos a sturdy square tower is a silent testament to a time long past. Its history remains shrouded in mystery. We know it is not Byzantine nor Frankish. Its construction style strongly suggests an Ottoman origin. The name Kula itself a Turkish word for tower supports this theory. Many similar towers were built throughout Greece by the Turks. Some served as watchtowers others as homes for local officials. Perhaps this Tower of Anthussa-Ymittos served a similar purpose.

Imagine the life within its walls centuries ago. Picture three stories of solid stone a place of refuge from the elements and perhaps from enemies. The original entrance was high up on the south side. A later entrance was added at ground level. Thick walls over half a meter thick guarded against intruders. Small holes irregularly placed in the walls possibly served as gun ports. They offer a glimpse into the practical needs of its inhabitants.

The Tower of Anthussa-Ymittos stands at approximately 470 meters above sea level. Only two floors remain today. Its present height is 6.25 meters. But in its prime it must have reached 8 or 9 meters. The vaulted ceiling of the first floor still remains intact. A testament to the skill of its builders. A reminder of its former glory.

The Tower of Anthussa-Ymittos is more than just stones and mortar. It is a portal to the past. It represents a chapter in Athens’ rich and complex history. A history of empires and struggles. Of lives lived and battles fought.

Sadly the tower has been reported as ruinous since 1722. Yet it still stands. A silent witness to the centuries that have passed. A reminder of the enduring strength of human structures and human resilience. Let us take a moment to appreciate the Tower of Anthussa-Ymittos. Let us reflect on the untold stories within its weathered walls.
