Colonel Abraham Tovey’s last stand. That’s the spirit that lingers here at Tovey Battery. This Gibraltar stronghold, named in his honor, echoes with tales of the Great Siege. Tovey Battery wasn’t always what you see today. It started as a key position during that grueling siege in the late 18th century. Colonel Tovey, the battery’s namesake, commanded the Royal Artillery during that conflict. He tragically died here in November 1781. By the end of the 19th century, Tovey Battery boasted two powerful 6-inch guns. These guns were part of Gibraltar’s close-range defense, fourteen guns in total. The battery’s importance grew over time. In 1911, it led to the closure of the less effective Hayne’s Cave Battery, which only had 4-inch guns. During World War II, Tovey Battery continued to serve, armed with its two 6-inch guns, guarding Gibraltar’s strategic waters.
