What kind of castle is large enough to house a whole garrison, but still gets completely destroyed? The ruined castle at Tosters, a district of Feldkirch here in Liechtenstein, is one such place. Sadly, there’s not much information available about this intriguing ruin. We do know that it was originally built around 1260 by the Count of Montfort. It sprawled over an impressive area of 121 by 64 meters. This made it large enough to hold a significant number of soldiers. Despite its size, the castle was destroyed in 1405 during the Appenzell War. It was rebuilt around 1408, and the last recorded reconstructions date back to the 16th century. Around this time, the main gate was moved to the castle’s south corner. By 1616, the once-imposing fortress was abandoned and left to decay. Today, only the ruins of the Tosters castle remain. However, they stand as a silent testament to the turbulent history of this region.
