“A silent guardian, watching over Vicenza for centuries.” That’s the Torrione, standing tall right before your eyes. The Torrione, meaning “The Big Tower,” isn’t just a catchy name. This imposing structure has overlooked Vicenza since the 12th century, bearing witness to the city’s triumphs and turmoil. Originally a tower house, it was later expanded by the formidable Ezzelino III da Romano, a figure known as the “tyrant”. His reign might have been harsh, but it was Ezzelino who truly fortified the Torrione, making it a cornerstone of Vicenza’s defenses. After his death, the tower was largely demolished. But its story didn’t end there. The powerful Della Scala family from Verona saw its potential and rebuilt it, incorporating it into Vicenza’s city walls during the 14th century. Imagine, the Torrione standing guard at the western gate, the very entrance to Vicenza’s beating heart. The Visconti family, during their reign, further enhanced it, adding crenellations and a lantern, shaping the iconic silhouette we see today. Today, the Torrione offers not just a glimpse into the past but breathtaking panoramic views of Vicenza.
