Rising from the heart of Milan’s financial district, Torre Turati stands as a testament to architectural ingenuity. This imposing structure, commissioned by Reale Mutua Assicurazioni, was envisioned as a gateway to the city’s burgeoning financial hub in Piazza della Repubblica. Designed by the renowned architect Giovanni Muzio, along with Lorenzo Muzio and Pietro Giulio Bosisio, Torre Turati shares its prominent location with another skyscraper, designed by Luigi Mattioni. The tower itself rises from a two-level base. This base was originally intended to house a bank. A smaller, five-story building flanks the tower, dedicated to office spaces. Torre Turati’s design is a blend of functionality and elegance. The first eleven floors buzz with office activity, each floor cleverly divided into four units. Above, the remaining eight floors offer luxurious residential apartments, a unique feature that sets Torre Turati apart from other skyscrapers. The tower’s facade reveals a fascinating interplay of steel and concrete, a deliberate choice by the architects to showcase the building’s mixed structural elements. Horizontal bands and strategically placed recesses around the pillars create a rhythmic pattern. This intricate design is further accentuated by a double row of openings, partially veiled by grilles, which house the building’s service systems. A closer look at Torre Turati’s side facades reveals a different aesthetic. Here, prefabricated concrete panels, speckled with marble chips in two shades of brown, create a smooth, continuous surface. On the residential floors, these panels give way to spacious, asymmetrically arranged balconies, offering residents breathtaking views of the city. The construction of Torre Turati was not without its challenges. The architects’ initial proposal, featuring a setback design with concrete load-bearing walls, was rejected by the city council. Undeterred, they persevered, eventually realizing their vision with a steel and concrete structure that has graced Milan’s skyline since 1968. Between 2002 and 2003, some of the original facade materials were replaced with lighter, prefabricated panels produced by Mapei, ensuring the building continues to stand tall and proud. Torre Turati stands as more than just a building. It represents Milan’s dynamism and its unwavering pursuit of architectural innovation.
