Lost in time it seems, the Torre municipale stands before us. This tower has watched over Milan for centuries. It is a silent witness to the city’s evolving story. Let’s explore its history.

The Torre municipale is more than just bricks and mortar. It is a symbol of Milan’s rich heritage. Towers in Milan have historically served military and civic functions. They were crucial reference points for the city’s districts. This was especially true in the Middle Ages.

The history of Milan’s towers dates back to Roman times. Towers then had military functions. They were part of Milan’s Roman walls. Some towers had civic roles such as the tower of the carceres. From these gates, chariots would race in Milan’s Roman circus.

The Middle Ages brought a shift in the towers’ military function. Each district in Milan had a watchtower. It was often part of a noble palace. Cavalry units guarded these towers. They were manned by nobles. The towers along Milan’s medieval walls were guarded by city garrisons.

The Torre municipale played a vital role in Milan’s civic life. Originally built in the 13th century, it marked the official opening and closing times. Reconstruction occurred in the 17th century. The tower stands atop the Palazzo dei Giureconsulti. It faces Piazza Mercanti.

At the base of the Torre municipale, a statue of Saint Ambrose stands proudly. Luigi Scorzini sculpted the neoclassical statue in 1833. Mannerist reliefs surround it. Below the clock, a Latin plaque honors Prefect Fabrizio Bossi. The Torre municipale is also known as the Torre di Napo Torriani.

Other notable towers include those of the Castello Sforzesco. Francesco Sforza transformed the Castello di Porta Giovia. Work began in 1450. It became the Castello Sforzesco.

In 1452, Filarete was hired to design and decorate the castle’s central tower. This tower is still called Torre del Filarete. In 1476, under Bona di Savoia’s regency, the Torre di Bona was built. The Torre del Tesoro also called Torre della Castellana was added. It stands on the castle’s west corner.

Sadly, in 1521, the Torre del Filarete collapsed. A French soldier accidentally detonated a bomb. The tower had been used as an armory. It was rebuilt during the Castello Sforzesco’s restoration. The restoration was completed in 1905. Sixteenth-century drawings helped restore its original look.

Towers also rose along Milan’s Spanish walls. They played a crucial defensive role. Tower construction continued through the centuries. It includes the city’s skyscrapers from the early 20th century.

While structures like the Torre Velasca represent modern innovation, the Torre municipale remains. It stands as a testament to Milan’s enduring spirit. Its historical relevance helps to understand the city’s evolution. The Torre municipale is a true landmark in Milan. It connects us to the past. It is a reminder of the city’s vibrant story.
