Whispers carried on the Douro’s breeze speak of Pedro-Sem. The Torre do Palácio dos Terenas, also known as the Torre de Pedro-Sem or Torre da Marca, stands before us, a silent sentinel from 14th-century Porto. Pedro de Sem, chancellor to King Afonso IV, commissioned this tower. It was initially part of the city’s defensive wall, a symbol of royal authority. The Torre do Palácio dos Terenas wasn’t always a palace addition. It stood proudly as the centerpiece of a medieval estate. Imagine the bustling activity around the tower in those early days. It was a landmark, a beacon in the evolving landscape. Over the centuries, the Torre do Palácio dos Terenas passed through different hands. The Brandão family held it for an extended period. They even built a palace adjacent to the tower in the 18th century. This grand addition elevated the tower’s status. It became associated with the Counts and Marquesses of Terena, eventually the Marques of Monfalim. In the 20th century, the Torre do Palácio dos Terenas and the palace were acquired by the Diocese of Porto. It served as the Episcopal Palace, a fitting role for such a historic structure. Today, the tower houses the Fundação SPES, a foundation dedicated to developing “a civilization of Love and Beauty.” Look closely at the rectangular tower. Despite alterations, it retains its medieval character. The eastern portico and small rectangular opening on the ground floor hint at its defensive past. The twin-trilobed windows on the first floor and the rectangular windows on the second offer a glimpse into its evolution over time. The merlons atop the machicolations complete the medieval picture. While the palace mostly obscures the other facades, the top floor provides glimpses of the southern and western sides, revealing more of those distinctive windows. The Torre do Palácio dos Terenas has witnessed Porto’s transformation from a medieval town to a bustling modern city. Its enduring presence reminds us of the city’s rich history and the powerful figures who shaped its destiny.
