What secrets does this ancient stone sentinel hold? Right before you stands the Torre des Garroveret. It is also known as the Torre del Cap de Barbaria. This incredible defense tower dates back to the 18th century. Feel the sea breeze as we step back in time.

The Torre des Garroveret stands 65 meters above the sea. It is located on Punta des Garroveret. This strategic location allowed it to control navigation. It watched over the south and southwest waters of Formentera. Imagine the scene centuries ago. Pirate attacks were common. The islanders relied on these towers for protection.

Constructed in 1763, the Torre des Garroveret was designed by engineer Garcìa Martinez. He followed the plans of Joan Ballester from 1756. The tower’s structure is a truncated cone. It rises nine meters high. It features two floors and an upper platform. A sentry box sits atop, protected by a parapet.

Notice the materials. The Torre des Garroveret is built from limestone masonry and lime mortar. Six ribs of marès blocks are evenly spaced around its perimeter. Two sandstone cords circle the exterior. One is halfway up, the other at the base of the parapet. These details show the craftsmanship of the era.

Entry to the Torre des Garroveret is on the upper floor. From there, stairs connect to the lower level and the platform above. Both chambers have vaulted ceilings. Think of the guards who once stood watch here. They scanned the horizon for approaching enemy ships.

Originally, the Torre des Garroveret had artillery. It was equipped with a cannon from the Sant Francesc church. By 1824, however, it was disarmed. It then served only as a watchtower. Permanent watchkeepers weren’t assigned until 1852. At that time the Ministry of War created a special corps.

The defense system included other towers. Four other towers on Formentera were part of it. Also there was the tower on S’Espalmador. Seven towers on Ibiza completed the network. They communicated using fire and smoke signals. These warned the population of approaching danger. The Torre des Garroveret played a crucial role in this network.

Today, visiting the Torre des Garroveret is free. It’s a great way to connect with the island’s history. Admire the old architecture. Enjoy the stunning sea views. It offers a glimpse into Formentera’s past.

Declared a Bien de Interès Cultural in 1949, the Torre des Garroveret is a protected landmark. It stands as a testament to Formentera’s resilience. It reminds us of the constant threat of pirates. The tower guaranteed the safety. It helped the island repopulate from the late 17th century.

As you stand here, consider the lives of those who defended this island. The Torre des Garroveret isn’t just a tower. It is a symbol of Formentera’s enduring spirit. The Garroveret Tower links the past and present. It allows us to appreciate Formentera’s rich heritage.
