The Torre del Reloj de Uyuni is more than just a clock tower. It’s a cultural icon. The tower is located between Aniceto Arce Square and Potosí Avenue. Its image is everywhere. You can see it on posters and calendars. These promote tourism in the region.

Construction began in 1926. It was an initiative led by the Centro Dramático Infantil. This group aimed to boost cultural development. Father Luis Buitrago was a key figure. He organized theater performances to raise funds. One popular play was “Marcha de Cáliz”. It depicted Andalusia in Spain. The performances even took place in neighboring towns.

A committee formed. Eudoro Calvimontes led it. Pedro Urgrinovich, Miguel Gonzáles, and Natalio Cardozo were also members. They imported the clock from Oscar & Meyer in Hamburg, Germany. The clock arrived in February 1929. The community wished for musical chimes. However, limited funds prevented this addition.

Lucien Dupont designed the architectural work. He created an elegant yet simple design. The tower is a solid cement structure. Miguel Vargas Guarachi assembled the clock. He was a local resident. Many doubted his ability. But he proved them wrong. Vargas ensured the clock worked perfectly. His son Víctor helped him. He passed his father the weights.

The Torre del Reloj de Uyuni started working on April 20, 1930. An inscription inside the tower marks this date. The tower has withstood harsh weather. This includes severe winters and strong winds. It is a symbol of Uyuni for Bolivia and the world.

The Cámara de Diputados approved a law. It instructs the Ministry of Cultures and Tourism. It also includes the Potosí Departmental Government and the Uyuni Municipal Government. They must implement policies. These policies should preserve and promote the clock. The Concejo Municipal de Uyuni even created an award. It is called “Reloj de Oro”. It recognizes notable contributions to the city and country.

The Torre del Reloj de Uyuni is often featured in books and websites. It promotes Uyuni’s tourist attractions. Replicas of the clock exist in other cities. These are in Cochabamba and Oruro. Migrants from Uyuni built them.

The clock stopped working for many years. The Club Royal hired a specialist. This specialist was from Sucre. He repaired the clock. Now, it functions again. It brings joy and punctuality to the town.

The tower has witnessed much. It has seen funerals, processions, and carnivals. It has also seen parades and marches. Once, a petroleum company wanted to move the clock. They wanted to center it on the avenue. The local government rejected the idea. So the clock remains in its original spot.

The Torre del Reloj de Uyuni is our Eiffel Tower. It is our obelisk. It is a unique part of Uyuni’s landscape. Remember its history. Remember its importance to the community. This clock represents progress. It symbolizes the heart of Uyuni.
