“Fasten your seatbelts,” the architect must have said, because the Torre de Madrid is a rocket ship aimed at the sky! Today, we’re not talking about space travel but about a landmark that once held the title of the tallest concrete building in the world. Right here we can observe the Torre de Madrid.

Let’s delve into the story of this iconic structure. The Torre de Madrid stands tall on the Plaza de España. It’s more than just a building, it’s a symbol of Madrid itself.

The Torre de Madrid’s story began in the 1950s. Julián and José María Otamendi Machimbarrena, two talented architects, designed it. They were commissioned by the Metropolitan Real Estate Agency. This agency had previously worked with them on the Edificio España.

Construction of the Torre de Madrid commenced in 1954. It reached completion in 1957. On October 15, 1957, the tower officially opened its doors. At that time, it was a marvel of modern architecture.

Standing at 142 meters tall with 36 floors, the Torre de Madrid held a prestigious title. Until 1967, it was the highest office building in Western Europe. Brussels’ South Tower then surpassed it.

Imagine the vision the architects had! They planned for the Torre de Madrid to be more than just offices. They envisioned 500 stores, spacious galleries, a hotel, and even a cinema within its walls.

The tower also boasted twelve elevators. These were the fastest models available at the time. They could whisk people up at a speed of 3.5 meters per second.

For many years, the Torre de Madrid reigned supreme as the tallest building in Spain. However, in 1982, the Torrespaña telecommunications tower took over that honor.

The Torre de Madrid even made its mark on the silver screen. It appeared in numerous Spanish movies released in the 1960s. It became a familiar sight to moviegoers.

In 2005, the real estate agency Metrovacesa decided to sell the Torre de Madrid, along with the Edificio España. The sale was part of a larger acquisition by the French company Gecina. The price was around 400 million euros.

In 2012, the building underwent redevelopment. Apartments were created on floors 10-32. Then, in 2017, the Hotel Barceló Torre de Madrid opened on floors 1-9.

The building is depicted in 1984 movie The Hit. A part of it is shot in an apartment in one of the upmost floors and its balcony.

The Torre de Madrid continues to be an important landmark in Madrid. It stands as a testament to the city’s architectural history. It reminds us of a time when Madrid was reaching for the sky.

As we conclude our visit to the Torre de Madrid, remember its rich history. Think about the visionaries who created this iconic structure. It remains a symbol of Madrid’s ambition and architectural prowess.
