A salty breeze whispers secrets. It carries the scent of the sea and the distant cries of gulls. Before you stands the Torre de s’Espalmador a sentinel against the turquoise embrace of the Mediterranean.

This isn’t just any tower. It’s a silent storyteller. Built around 1750 perhaps by the engineer Joan Ballester it’s one of the first of five defense towers erected on Formentera in the 18th century. It stands guard alongside the tower of Ses Portes in Ibiza protecting the strategic passage between the islands of Ibiza and Formentera.

Imagine the lives of the two guards stationed here until 1867. They were part of the Balearic Tower Corps. They witnessed centuries pass. They saw pirates sail by. They felt the relentless sun and the fierce storms. They held the line against invaders.

This tower isn’t just a historical landmark. It’s a place steeped in local legend. In the 20th century young Ibicencan men used it for coming-of-age rituals. They spent nights within its walls. They braved the chilling tales of ghostly pirates.

The tower itself is a marvel. Its circular base tapers to a truncated cone. It boasts sturdy walls of carefully hewn masonry. Twelve chains of embedded sea-stone blocks add extra strength. The ground floor was for gunpowder and supplies. The top floor housed the guards. Access was via a rope or wooden ladder. It was protected by a machicolation.

Later a doorway was opened. A restoration in 1993 rebuilt the main facade. The machicolations were repaired. The Torre de s’Espalmador is a testament to Formentera’s resilience. It stands as a beacon of history a silent guardian of the island and a reminder of a time when vigilance was paramount. Look closely. You might just see the echoes of the past within its weathered stones.
