Rising proudly before us, the Torre de les Aigües del Besòs stands as a testament to Barcelona’s industrial ingenuity. This beautiful walled tower is 130 years old. It has always marked the face of Sant Martí. Let’s delve into the captivating story of this unique structure.

The Torre de les Aigües del Besòs was built between 1880 and 1882. Its purpose was to supply Barcelona with drinking water. The Barcelona industrialist Xavier Camps and municipal architect Pere Falqués spearheaded the project. They erected the complex near the mouth of the Besòs River. The goal was to draw and pump water from the riverbed.

Unfortunately, the project faced an unexpected challenge. The water became too salty. Despite this setback, the Torre de les Aigües del Besòs continued to serve a vital function. For nearly a century it provided water for industrial use. It remained fully operational until 1992.

The Torre de les Aigües is unique. It is built only with bricks. There are no iron elements or beams. Despite its technical function the architect added ornamental elements. No two floors are identical.

In the years following its closure, the Torre de les Aigües del Besòs fell into disrepair. In 2010 an ambitious renovation project began. The goal was to restore the structure brick by brick. The tower’s stairs reaching 50 meters high were faithfully restored. The bannisters were also carefully preserved.

The renovated Torre de les Aigües del Besòs reopened to the public. It became a privileged vantage point in the heart of Sant Martí. Visitors can ascend the tower. They can enjoy panoramic views of Barcelona.

The restoration project also incorporated modern artistic elements. In 2012 Himmelsrichtungen a sculpture by Blinky Palermo was installed. Lighting installations complement the architecture. Water sound effects remind visitors of the tower’s original function.

Today the Torre de les Aigües del Besòs stands as a symbol of Barcelona’s industrial past. It is a cultural center that welcomes visitors to explore its history. The tower also houses the Arxiu Històric del Poblenou. It is an association dedicated to researching and preserving the history of the Poblenou district.
