What if I told you that this tower before us, the Torre Amigazzi, is more than just an old structure? It is a symbol of resilience and rebirth.
Welcome to the Corte della Torre Amigazzi in Rescaldina near Milan. This rural court has a story shrouded in some mystery. It stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of this community.
The history of the Corte Amigazzi is not crystal clear. Some believe it existed before 1700. The first solid evidence is from the Teresian land register of 1721. The name comes from the Amigazzi family. Giulia Amigazzi lived in the tower on Via Gramsci. She inherited the Melzi property through the will of Barbara Melzi.
Originally shaped like a C, the court became an H in the 1800s. Parts of the original construction were demolished. Later in the 1800s, more changes closed the court on all four sides. It expanded westward probably by demolishing part of the building.
From the 1930s to the 1970s, the building saw further modifications. Then, it was abandoned until the early 2000s. The Municipality of Rescaldina acquired the tower in 2008. This was reaffirmed in 2010 and was scheduled to end in 2024.
The current local government decided to revise the agreement. They applied for PINQUA funding. They launched a tender worth almost 5 million euros. The Torre Amigazzi became a focus. The goal was to restore its central role in the urban fabric.
Before recent renovations, the tower area covered over 5700 square meters. The square took up over 2500 square meters of this space. After the project the tower area will increase. The square will shrink. Part of the square will become a new urban park.
The ground floor will include public spaces. There will be a multipurpose hall and coworking areas. A social concierge will also be available. The first floor is planned to have twelve residential units. Five will be traditional two and three-room apartments. Six units will be co-housing spaces with private and shared areas like kitchens and living rooms.
The side of the building facing the square will be glass-enclosed. This area will house the library on both floors. It will include a reading area, a children’s space connected to the park, bookshelves for books and comics plus a museum about Rescaldina’s history and coworking areas.
The entire building will produce energy instead of consuming it. It uses modern eco-friendly and energy-saving designs. The project includes a fenced park. This park will extend to the road. It features trees, spaces for library events, children’s areas and places for relaxation.
Importantly there are plans to open the tower to the public. A belvedere will be created. From this vantage point you will see panoramic views. You will be approximately 30 meters above the metropolitan city of Milan.
Currently about two-thirds of the complex is being rebuilt. Torre Amigazzi itself is being renovated. Finocchiaro Costruzioni won the contract. The renovation started on April 10, 2024. It is expected to finish by January 9, 2026. During the demolition materials are being recovered. They will be reused as fill in the new construction.
As you stand here imagine the Torre Amigazzi as it once was. Then envision what it will become. A modern hub for the community. A place where history meets the future. A symbol of Rescaldina’s bright tomorrow.
