From Top of Topanga Overlook you can see the Santa Monica Mountains. Look further to see the Santa Susana Mountains and the San Gabriel Mountains. Admire the wide valley below.

In the early 20th century the San Fernando Valley was largely undeveloped agricultural land. Imagine the vast fields stretching out before you. Now it is a vibrant urban landscape.

Some people confuse Top of Topanga Overlook with the Topanga Summit. Both offer great views of the San Fernando Valley and surrounding mountains. But remember they are not the same location.

The first road through Topanga Canyon opened in 1915. By the 1920s the Summit had become a popular stopping point for travelers. The area was developed with amenities for visitors. These included parking areas viewing platforms and refreshment stands.

In the past this popular lookout was a simple gravel lot. It had potholes and a precarious entrance off the busy road. A recent face-lift has transformed it into an oasis.

In 1994 the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy bought this nine-acre parcel. They transformed the gravel lot into what you see today. The conservancy created a balance between park space and parking.

The improved Top of Topanga Overlook includes a paved 16-space parking lot. There are picnic tables benches a drinking fountain and accessible restrooms. Look around at the display of historical photos.

The area is patrolled overnight by rangers. These rangers are from the Mountains Recreation and Conservation Authority. This ensures your safety and preserves this beautiful space.

Top of Topanga Overlook stands as one of the highest points in the Santa Monica Mountains. Enjoy the panoramic vistas and the fresh mountain air.

Before you leave take a moment to appreciate the transformation of this space. From a simple gravel lot to a welcoming overlook. Top of Topanga Overlook offers a renewed connection to nature and history.
