Imagine a park, a place where sport, history, and remembrance intertwine. Toowong Memorial Park, nestled in the heart of Brisbane, stands as a testament to the sacrifices made by those who served in World War I.

This park was created in 1918 by Toowong Town Council to honour the 101 locals who bravely enlisted in the war. Decorative wrought iron gates, erected at the park’s official opening, still stand today. The park’s most prominent feature is the soaring Toowong Soldiers’ Memorial, a 12-metre tall, fluted column unveiled in 1922. Beneath this imposing structure, carved stone wreaths and swags elegantly frame a marble drinking fountain.

But here’s the interesting part: this park wasn’t always about memory and remembrance. Once, this land was one of many large estates in Toowong, an upper-middle class suburb. The arrival of the railway line in 1875 spurred development, transforming the area into a thriving community.

This park, however, remained dedicated to remembrance. The memorial’s base acts as a poignant roll call, listing the names of every Toowong resident who enlisted in the Great War, etched onto three marble slabs. It’s a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by those who answered the call of their nation. It’s a story of community, a tale of resilience, and a powerful reminder of the impact of history on the landscape we see today. It’s a story found within the heart of Toowong Memorial Park, as rich and varied as the lives it honors.
