“Built between 1918 and 1919” whispers the very stone of Tonkin Palace. Here before you stands a testament to French colonial architecture. This isn’t just a building it’s a living history book.

Tonkin Palace in Hanoi’s Hoan Kiem District boasts a fascinating past. Originally the Residential Palace of the Tonkin Governor it housed French colonial power. It’s more than just elegant French Colonial style. Adolphe Bussy designed it with subtle Napoleon III influences.

The name itself changed. It became Bac Bo Phu after the Viet Minh’s 1945 takeover. This marked the start of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. The palace was a key location during the August Revolution. It even served as President Ho Chi Minh’s temporary residence and workplace. Can you imagine the weight of history within these walls?

Intense battles raged here. On December 20 1946 the French Army fought hard to reclaim Tonkin Palace from the Viet Minh. The fighting was brutal. It marked an early stage of the First Indochina War. After six attacks and many casualties the French won.

Today the palace is the Government Guest House. It welcomes distinguished visitors from around the world. Walk these grounds and feel the echoes of revolutions and wars. Feel the hushed elegance of a building that has witnessed momentous change. This is more than just a place to visit it is a journey through Vietnamese history. A journey you’ll never forget.
