Can you imagine what it must have been like to explore the Schellenberger Ice Cave, a natural wonder waiting to be discovered, before the Toni-Lenz-Hütte was built? Right before us stands the Toni-Lenz-Hütte, a mountain hut on the eastern side of the Untersberg, close to the legendary Schellenberger Ice Cave. This charming shelter serves as a meeting point for hikers and nature lovers, a respite for those seeking a break from the demands of their explorations. The Toni-Lenz-Hütte was originally built under the auspices of the “Verein für Höhlenkunde Schellenberg” in 1936 and became a symbol of hospitality and adventure in the heart of the Bavarian Alps. Toni Lenz, known for his welcoming demeanor, managed the hut for many years and became renowned for his culinary delights, including his signature Kaiserschmarrn, savory pea soup, and herrings in butter, a dish he called Laussalbe. To honor his dedication, the hut was officially named the Toni-Lenz-Hütte in 1950. Today, visitors can enjoy breathtaking views from the sun-bathed terrace, gazing across the Salzach Valley towards the Salzkammergut mountains, the majestic Dachstein, and the Tennengebirge. The Toni-Lenz-Hütte offers an escape into the rugged beauty of the Berchtesgadener Alps, a place where nature, history, and hospitality converge in a truly unforgettable experience.
